Calorie Calculator to Lose Weight by Date
How does a calorie calculator to lose weight by date work?
It estimates how many calories you burn each day, then works out the daily deficit needed to reach your goal weight by your chosen date. The calculator follows four steps:
- BMR: Your basal metabolic rate is estimated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.
- TDEE: BMR is multiplied by an activity factor (1.2 to 1.9) to get your total daily energy expenditure.
- Deficit: Weight to lose × 7,700 kcal per kg ÷ days until your target date.
- Daily calories: TDEE minus the deficit.
How many calories should I eat to lose weight by a certain date?
Eat your TDEE minus the required daily deficit but don't go below roughly 1,200 kcal/day for women and 1,500 kcal/day for men unless you are under the supervision of a medical doctor.
Worked example: A 35-year-old woman, 165 cm and 80 kg, with light activity wants to reach 72 kg in 12 weeks (84 days).
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor) | about 1,495 kcal |
| TDEE (× 1.375) | about 2,056 kcal |
| Weight to lose | 8 kg |
| Required deficit (8 × 7,700 ÷ 84) | about 733 kcal/day |
| Daily calories | about 1,323 kcal |
| Weekly pace | about 0.67 kg (1.5 lb) |
How many calories per day to lose weight (female)?
It depends on her age, size and activity, so there is no single number. Most adult women maintain their weight on roughly 1,600–2,400 kcal/day. A moderate deficit of 300–750 kcal below that range suits most women, and 1,200 kcal/day is the commonly cited floor.
What is a safe rate of weight loss?
Most health guidance, including from the CDC, suggests losing about 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lb) per week. A daily deficit converts to weekly loss roughly like this:
| Daily deficit | Approx. weekly loss |
|---|---|
| 250 kcal | 0.23 kg (0.5 lb) |
| 500 kcal | 0.45 kg (1 lb) |
| 750 kcal | 0.68 kg (1.5 lb) |
| 1,000 kcal | 0.91 kg (2 lb) |
What if my goal date is too aggressive?
If the plan needs more than about 1,000 kcal/day of deficit, or pushes intake below the minimums above, the calculator flags it. You then have three options:
- Move the target date later.
- Raise your target weight.
- Add activity instead of cutting food further.
Is watching calories enough to lose weight?
Yes. Weight loss requires an energy deficit, so tracking calories alone works for most people. Results are better and muscle loss is lower if you also eat enough protein, strength train, sleep well and stay active through daily movement (NEAT).
Which calorie calculator is most accurate?
Calculators based on the Mifflin-St Jeor equation are among the most reliable general-purpose estimators, and they are generally considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation. Every calculator still gives an estimate, and it can differ from your true needs by a few hundred calories. Track your weight for 2–3 weeks, then adjust your intake if the scale isn't moving as planned.
How do I handle plateaus?
As you are losing weight, your TDEE decreases, and thus the same amount of food intake will create a smaller deficit. You want to recalculate your deficit every 4-5 kg (10 lb) lost based on your new weight and the number of days remaining. Also, make sure that you are not eating too much on weekends and not exercising enough during the week before reducing calories again.
